80s Trivia: Who famously told Dan Quayle, 'Senator, you are no Jack Kennedy?'

Obviously, we love politics and history here at Pocket Trivia.  We have two other games - Pocket Trivia: US History and Pocket Trivia: US Presidents.  This question, off of Pocket Trivia: 80s Trivia, is a mix of the 80s and the politics.  It is also one of my favorite all-time moments of any political debate - mainly because Dan Quayle looks like he is about to cry.  Here's the question:  Who famously told Dan Quayle, "Senator, you are no Jack Kennedy?"  Was it Michael Dukakis, Lloyd Bentsen, George W. Bush or Dan Quayle?

Answer after the jump:

Okay, not quite sure why I said that Dan Quayle could have been one of the answers.  I must have been tired.  Dan Quayle may have been known for his no so smart quotes, but he never told himself he was no Jack Kennedy.  It wasn't George W. Bush either - remember, George W. Bush was President #43, but H.W. Bush was #41 - and I really doubt he would have said that.  It wasn't Dukakis.  Dukakis was the Democratic Presidential nominee in 1988 - and he tried to concentrate his fire on George H.W. Bush.

So, that leaves the correct answer: Lloyd Bentsen.  Bentsen was a well respected Senator from Texas who would go on to serve as Bill Clinton's Secretary of the Treasury.  In 1988, Michael Dukakis tapped Bentsen to serve as his Vice Presidential running mate.  That year, as is tradition, the Quayle and Bentsen had one Vice Presidential debate.  Bentsen spent most of the debate ignoring Quayle and attacking Bush, while Quayle went after Dukakis.

At the time, Dan Quayle was 41 and a Senator from Indiana.  His selection as Bush's Vice Presidential pick surprised many, as Quayle was not yet on the national stage.  At such a young age, he fielded many questions about his youth and ability to serve as Vice President or possible President.  One of those questions came up in the debate against Bentsen.  Quayle compared himself to Kennedy in his answer.  Bentsen seized the moment and delivered one of the greatest lines in any debate.  See below:
