80s Trivia: Who killed John Lennon?

We frequently deal with questions related to Presidential assassination attempts, or actual assassinations.  However, tragically, every now and then we venture into the same area, but for music.  As most of you are probably aware, John Lennon was killed by a crazed fan on December 8, 1980, one of the worst days in music history.  Off of Pocket Trivia: 80s Trivia - What was the name of the man that killed John Lennon?  Was it John Hinckley, Mark David Chapman, David Berkowitz or Phil Rudd?

John Hinckley is would-be assassin, but his target was Ronald Reagan, not Lennon.

David Berkowitz was the famous Son of Sam serial killer.  Berkowitz killed six and injured others in New York City, from 1976-1977.  Nothing to do with Lennon.

Phil Rudd is the drummer for AC/DC.  I honestly have no idea how he wondered into this question.

ANYWAY, the correct answer is Mark David Chapman.  Chapman was disturbed from childhood and obsessed with Lennon.  On the day of the assassination, Chapman actually met Lennon outside of his home, the Dakota apartments, and obtained his autograph.  Lennon had left for a recording session and came back later that night at 10:49pm.  He and Yoko Ono exited their limo and walked past Chapman.  At that point, Chapman dropped into a combat stance and shot at Lennon five times, hitting him four times.  Lennon was rushed to the hospital but dead on arrival, having bled to death from multiple gun shot wounds.

There are many enduring images of Lennon's assassination.  One of the most enduring is Howard Cosell's announcement to the world, on Monday Night Football, of Lennon's assassination.  The footage of the announcement is below.
