As much as we like to pretend otherwise, American history is replete with instances of this country engaging in the worst of human nature. Though we never stooped quite as low as others, America still has many blemishes on its past. One of those blemishes affected the victims of the Trial of Tears, which is the feature of today's question. Off of Pocket Trivia: US History - Who were the victims during the "Trail of Tears"? Is it Native Americans, British Loyalists, American Revolutionaries or Japanese Americans?
The answer to this one, sadly, is Native Americans. In this particular travesty, the American government forced Native Americans from their homes and land during the Jackson Presidential administration. Such a move was not without controversy - indeed, the Supreme Court ruled that Native Americans living within the United States were entitled to some sovereign rights. However, President Jackson famously defied the court's ruling and moved the Indians anyway.
In the end, five different Indian tribes were forcibly marched from their land in Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi into new lands in Oklahoma. Anywhere from 6,000 - 10,000 died.
